CIAO AMERICA!

Ciao! My name is Alexis Fabbri and I am a graduate student at American University focusing on international print journalism.

I grew up in Rockville, Maryland as a Catholic school girl. For college, I made the move to the Bronx and Fordham University, another Catholic institution. At Fordham, I majored in Urban Studies and Communications. I wrote my senior thesis, "Yo I'm Ghetto: Urban Adolescence in the Bronx" based on my experiences working with the Bronx Junior Riverkeepers in the Kingsbridge neighborhood.

After graduation, I spent time on the Mexican border working with immigrants, took Spanish lessons in Guatemala, and earned my Teaching English as a Foreign Language certificate in Madrid, Spain.

I was in Madrid on September 11, 2001 when planes hit the pentagon and world trade center, in the two cities on the planet where everyone I know lives and works.

I couldn't wait to get back to the States, and after two weeks I did. I kissed the floor of Dulles Airport after a marathon journey from Rome to Madrid to Brusells to New York.

After teaching diplomats and foreign military in Rosslyn, VA, I moved to Monsummano Terme, Italy with my then-boyfriend, Massimo, where I taught English at General Electric in Florence. We were married in 2003.

Before coming to American University, I worked at the Corporation for Public Broadcasting as the very first digital radio conversion coordinator for the public radio system. I even helped American's public radio station, WAMU, make the transition from analog to digital.

As a graduate intern, I write news briefs and analysis pieces for United Press International here in Washington. School's ending soon and I'm looking for a job.
